Not unreal: catalogue and magazine competition samples are going digital

What used to be a competition for catalogue printers has entered a new dimension for 2020: You don't need to submit printed samples to enter.

This year's Australian Real Media Awards has announced that with virtual judging planned, a screen resolution PDF of a publication is all that will be required for most categories. Exceptions are the emerging designer and emerging talent awards, and categories for 'real estate & property', 'creative design and execution' and 'best in class' categories.

Awards will be presented - virtually - on December 10.

In a guide to becoming the "bestest" champion ever, the group's Phil Mariette urges members and agencies to check out their best work before entering. "Some clients simply love awards, others need corporate approval," he says.

Apart from the designer and talent categories, major awards categories also include Brand of the Year, Media Brand Advertiser of the Year, Retailer of the Year, Agency of the Year and Judges' Choice.

The 34 other categories are arranged in ten groups: B2C, cosmetics and pharmacy, direct mail, excellence in craft - for design studios, creative agencies and commercial printers - fashion, home, effectiveness, media brands, retailers, and recreation and leisure.

A custom publishing category in 'media brands' covers what were previously known as magalogues and brandzines. "Think Coles 'Coles' magazine, Woolworths 'Fresh', David Jones' 'Jones' and more," says Mariette, "content rich editorial with strong brand equity building for long-term positioning albeit balanced with sales acquisitional features."

'Consumer publishing' is for the dwindling variety of magazines available in newsagents, while a further category covers the specialised 'trade/B2B publishing' sector.

"This is an opportunity for all publishers, brands and advertisers alike... all about the industry celebrating together, exploring successful campaigns in each sector," he says.
