Expect more video from a host of news publishers who are the recipients of Google's GNI YouTube innovation grants.

Nine News and Junkee Media - which is 85 per cent owned by billboard company oOh! Media - are the Australian winners, along with iNews, Kompas TV, kumparan.com, Narasi.tv and tvOne in Indonesia; ABS-CBN News and GMA News & Public Affairs in the Philippines; Hankyoreh Media and JTBC in Korea; EBC and The News Lens in Taiwan; Sure and Share Center and popular daily newspaper Thairath in Thailand; and HTV Television & Media Services and VTC Television in Vietnam.

India is the region's biggest recipient, with Google money for Asianet News Media & Entertainment, Bharatiya Digital Party (BhaDiPa), Factly, Gaon Connection, India Today Group, Live Data Visualisation, NDTV, NYOOOZ, ShepHertz and Video Volunteers.

Globally the winners list includes The Economist, Financial Times and The Guardian, as well as BuzzFeed News, CBS News and The New York Times

In Indonesia, journalist Najwa Shihab's media company Narasi TV will host workshops to train budding citizen journalists on visual storytelling, news video production and media literacy, encouraging more Indonesians to become credible content creators as well as critical consumers. Bangkok-headquartered Thairath will create a rights management platform for Thailand's freelance journalists. This platform will help Thai "stringers" more easily manage their footage rights from media companies. By protecting and promoting the important work of independent Thai journalists, the effort will support both the Thai media ecosystem and global news agencies seeking news about Thailand.

Google describes Junkee as "one of Australia's most innovative new media companies". It plans to "push boundaries even further" and experiment with new ways of informing audiences. Nine News will experiment with reaching global audiences and distributing Australian news content more broadly, while evaluating various commercialisation models.

The funding programme was announced in July, in support of online video in news publishing.
