Feed-driven app is Manila’s Star performer

A new feed-driven app for the Philippine Star gives readers the most up-to-date news in a tablet and smartphone-friendly format.

The Manila-based newspaper is the latest in a succession to make use of the Pagesuite technology, introduced at last year’s World Publishing Expo in Berlin.

Others to adopt the PS Live system have included the London Evening Standard and stablemate The Independent, the Belfast Telegraph and the UK’s Star magazine.

Editorial content from the newspapers’ CMS in XML or JSON feeds directly into the iOS app’s preformatted template, with provisions for reordering content, editing stories and headlines. Philippine Star operations vice president Tammy Mendoza says she “fell in love with the format the minute we laid our eyes on it.”

The app replaces a PDF-driven app, enabling publication of multiple editions through the day. The publisher added digital and HTML5 editions and a Pagesuite dynamic app, two years ago, scoring a success with online readers.

“We’re quite happy to deliver the new PS Live Philippine Star app to our readers. This app is the best of both worlds as it lets readers access the replica edition as well as article feeds that are easy to read in one go,” says Mendoza.

Readers are being given the opportunity to buy subscriptions for a week, month or longer periods, on a 14-day trial basis enabling them to access the digital edition and live feed content. A PDF replica edition is included, and can be downloaded and accessed offline.

The Star is the flagship of Star Group, which also publishes tabloids Pilipino Star Ngayon, Pang-Masa, The Freeman, and Banat. Its motto is ‘truth shall prevail’.
