Crinkling News faces closure... again

Eight months after raising more than $200,000 to fund its publication, Australian children's newspaper Crinkling News is again staring over the edge of a precipice.

The newspaper's founders, Saffron Howden and Remi Bianchi say that having "made every cent stretch as far as it possibly could", they can't go on publishing.

Or at least with "the resources we have".

Publication ceased on January 16, but it's not clear whether that is final, or pending a further injection of funds.

"There are big, exciting opportunities out there for Crinkling News and for you, the kids of Australia," Howden and Bianchi say on their website, "but it will need a much bigger business, government or philanthropy to take all the amazing things we have done together and keep the momentum going."

Despite the $212,303 raised by the crowdfunding campaign, they say only $139,692.85 was left "as new funds" to invest in the continuation and growth of the paper. Some $19,477 went to the crowdfunding platform and payment gateway, and $53,133.15 to servicing new subscriptions and perks people claimed as part of their crowdfunding contribution.

The remaining $139,692.85 has kept things going for a further eight months.

Subscribers have been told the publishers will be in touch with them about claiming a refund on the remainder of their subscription.
