Growth spurt for Arc as Bezos' systems business hits the spot

Arc Publishing, the newsmedia software development business of Jeff Bezos' Washington Post, has added almost 100 staff in the last 18 months.

Reports are that demand for Arc's systems have led to a waiting list, and the Post says the new hires will strengthen its ability to respond to these needs and support expansion.

The Post says Arc has experienced "incredible growth" in the past year,

tripling revenue, expanding to new regions and powering several large broadcasters. It says Arc technology is being used by sites that serve more than 600 million unique visitors a month.

Post chief information officer and product vice president Shailesh Prakash says the "exceptional" growth has seen the platform become "one of the go-to publishing systems in the world".

"We have brought on senior level talent to help us scale the business and, under Scot Gillespie's leadership, we have expanded significantly, adding more publishers and broadcasters as well as serving brands across industries."

As part of the investment, Arc is opening a dedicated engineering office in Chicago.

Arc's success has been cited as an inspiration to newsmedia publishers who look to supplement dwindling advertising revenues with diversification. Consultant Juan Senor says the same is true for Bezos' Amazon, which draws substantial revenue from the AWS cloud technology which Arc partly exploits.
