UK publisher Reach has launched its fourth print edition in recent weeks, as a battle develops with rival Newsquest.

The print mastheads have included a Newport edition of its Western Mail, a Wigan edition for the Manchester Evening News - where it competes with JPIMedia's Wigan Post - a South Tyneside and Durham edition of the (Newcastle) Chronicle and a Northumberland edition of The Journal, UK trade publication HoldTheFrontPage has reported.

For its part, Newsquest has created a new digital edition called The National Wales - which it plans to take nationally - against Reach's Wales Online.

Editor of Reach's Cardiff-based Western Mail Catrin Pascoe said its Newport digital coverage had helped Wales Online has become the city's best-read digital news platform, competition welcomed by South Wales Argus editor Gavin Thompson. "It's great to see anyone investing in local journalism," he told the website.
