Sicilian Wisprint Compact set to be European reference site

A new nine-tower press for Gazzetta del Sud in Messina is one of the first into Europe to be sold under the Wisprint brand.

Built at the Goss Graphic Systems China plant in Shanghai, the Wisprint Compact is similar in design to the Magnum Compact presses built there for customers in Sri Lanka and Staten Island, USA. The factory and its predecessor across the river in Shanghai have also been the primary source of Goss Community units installed globally for more than a decade.

The latest press - which has an unusual 620 mm cut-off for a 1000 mm web width - is being installed for Sicilian publisher Società Editrice Sud, with commissioning this summer.

The nine towers are being mounted in a substructure configuration above nine flying pasters, with a single 2:3:3 folder with quarterfold. Folder and controls - including full presetting and page control - are of Wisprint's own design.

QI Press Controls are installing colour register and cut-off control in a first for the Dutch specialist.

The 'quick-change' press will be used for SES' own publications as well as many short to medium run contract jobs which will take advantage of the Autoplate change capability. Products include Gazzetta del Sud, Gionale di Sicilia, Corriere dello Sport and Tuttosport.

The QIPC register systems - now supplied directly to the Shanghai factory - will help optimize quality and reduce waste. Carlo Caporizzi of agent GMDE says the installation will help Società Editrice Sud to print "more local editions in a simpler way".

He says the company had been looking for a solution to improve cost efficiency, and the combination of technologies was the result of a long relationship. "We always help them choose the best technologies," he says.

QIPC will install 18 mRC-3D cameras for colour register and another nine for cut-off control. Sales executive Harold Drinhuyzen says he expects it to become "a real reference site".

"They only go for the highest quality, and this press is an opportunity for us to prove that we are part of the solution that offers the best quality."
