News Corp Australia has surprised its critics with the launch of a web series on climate change.

The Time Is Now: The future of climate change on their top-rating news.com.au website is the product of a partnership with the Judith Neilson Institute for Journalism and Ideas and the Australian Science Media Centre.

It comes after criticism of News' editorial stance on climate change - including from James Murdoch - which led to accusations of climate change denial at the highest level. Criticisms have also been denied locally, although executive chairman Australasia Michael Miller said campaigns against its stance on climate change had had no commercial impact on the company.

The Time Is Now content series is a new direction and focusses on how climate change will alter Australians' way of life. Launching the site on Twitter yesterday, the news site's deputy editor James Law said those who continued to believe climate change was not real and that there was nothing Australia could do about it, had "their head in the sand"... prompting Media Watch presenter Paul Barry to quip that the Tweet might have been intended purely for internal consumption.

One social media post emphasised a familiar line, however, with "only climate cult members believe Australians can change the average temperature of the planet Earth by destroying their economy and paying lots more tax".

News.com.au says the series "created in collaboration with scientists, looks at how climate change will affect the average Australian's way of life, debunks the myths around climate change and bushfires, and looks at what people can do to make a difference".
