Thelma and Macca help boost reading for preschoolers

Books for preschoolers are back as News Corp Australia aims to encourage and inspire families to read with young children in its annual Raise a Reader campaign.

News Corp metro mastheads have the 15-part collection, part of its partnership with Good Start Early Learning Centres and the Australian Library and Information Service.

The campaign - now in its fifth year - will also amplify the preschool literacy programmes managed by state libraries, including Victoria's 1000 Books Before School programme and Queensland's First Five Forever, as well as the Story Time programmes in South Australia and NSW.

National education publisher Toni Hetherington says the campaign reflects a commitment to young readers and complemented the Kids News platform.

"Raise a Reader has traditionally focussed on school-aged readers but with research showing the first five years of a child's life are the most critical in establishing literacy skills, we have shifted our campaign focus to provide age-appropriate resources for preschoolers," she says.
