A recently-acquired Goss Universal 50 at leading Colombian newspaper Vanguardia Liberal is to have its QI Press Controls' colour register and cut-off system updated.

The QI technology will be integrated with EAE controls on the ten-tower press in Bucaramanga in the country's north.

Deputy production manager Alexander Delgado says this integration was a major factor in their choice: ""We didn't want to have an external system," he said. "The best thing for this automation is that everything is integrated in the same control console".

The newspaper, which celebrated its one hundredth anniversary last September, also owns a printing facility in Cartagena. The Universal 50 press had an outdated QIPC system, but the EAE controls had already been renewed. Delgado, says there are two reasons to invest in new press automation - waste savings and quality improvements. "We expect that these new systems will allow us to save on lost copies during start-up, allowing us to handle our raw materials more efficiently," he said. "In addition, we would like to deliver excellent quality to our customers.

"That should be possible with this automation."

The project sees six of the ten towers being equipped with the mRC-3D colour register and cut-off control system, using a total of 18 cameras. There are hopes the other four towers will be upgraded in the second half of 2020.

"New investments in technology will strengthen us to produce quality products for the next 100 years," says Delgado.
