Reports say music and events promoter Glenn Wheatley is looking at buying wire service Australian Associated Press, making him the latest of a handful of prospects.

The Sydney Morning Herald's Zoe Samios says Wheatley has signed a confidentiality agreement as a precursor to talks and due diligence, although her sources stressed there was "no guarantee" he would proceed with a bid.

Wheatley is best known as manager of Australian singer John - originally Johnny - Farnham, and as a shareholder in Sony Music Australia (since 2017) and NSW radio broadcaster Eon Broadcasting.

Pollster Gary Morgan has also identified himself as a prospect.

AAP chief executive Bruce Davidson stressed that no decision could be made of approaches until "meaningful talks" take place. "Nothing may come of these discussions."

AAP had delayed redundancies due to the interest reported from several parties.
