Up to 120 staff may lose their jobs as News Corp Australia consolidates Sydney and Melbourne contact centres into a single 'centre of excellence' in Adelaide.

The South Australia capital is at the heart of the now-global group's history, as the city in which Rupert Murdoch founded the 'News Limited' empire, named for his first daily newspaper.

Under the changes - effective from the end of July - some staff will be redeployed to other roles, but the company says "up to 120 jobs may be lost". News has committed to similar changes to its teams in Queensland - where it recently acquired the former APN Australian Regional Media business, with its Toowoomba call centre - bringing them into one central location within the state.

Publishing chief operating officer Damien Eales says the moves are being made to serve customers better: "The needs of our customers have changed and we must too. Through consolidating teams we can build scale and expertise.
Eales says News wants to be "easier to do business with", including providing simplified products and services and enabling customers to do business with it, "when and how they choose to".
