Young people's paper saved (updated)

Love is not enough for young people's newspaper Crinkling News, which had threatened this week's edition might be its last.

The national newspaper, which claims a readership of around 25,000 in Australia, was launched just over a year ago, but is in need of support.

Founding editor Saffron Howden says people love the product, but "like some of the best things that help give us a happy and healthy life", it costs money to produce.

"We need money so the newspaper can keep publishing and continue to be delivered to your home or school every week," she tells readers, urging them to tell friends, teachers and their parents, "your friends' parents, your principal, and your library" about the paper.

"If we can't raise enough money, this week's might be the last issue of Crinkling News we will be able to make."

Howden is a former Sydney Morning Herald journalist, and she says more than 50 journalists, photographers and cartoonists around the country and overseas help produce the newspaper.

Former NSW governor Marie Bashir is a patron, and the newspaper has an advisory board including former editor-in-chief of the Sydney Morning Herald Peter Fray - who founded fact-checking website PolitiFact Australia and is professor of journalism at Sydney's University of Technology - child psychologist Margot O'Brien, retired school principal Brian Debus, financial adviser Lidia Valenzuela and legal counsel Kristin Howden.

Fray says Crinkling News is an important publication in Australia: "The appetite from young people to find out about the news and what's happening in the world around them is often undervalued by adults - as is the need to boost media literacy in schools," he says.

NiemanLab's Ricardo Bilton says the newspaper's IndieGoGo crowdfunding campaign - launched this month - is already half way to the target of A$200,000 it says will help it "jump the final hurdle to sustainability".

He quotes Howden that putting out a high-quality paper "left little time to sit down in meetings securing additional seed funding". The money will be used to fund marketing, subscription sales, and ad sales efforts.

Update: Crinkling News announced today that it had met its $200,000 target, a day ahead of deadline; A$209,348 was raised from 1754 backers.
