Schur buys Melbourne maker for packaging concept

Schur International, the Danish company which develops newspaper mailroom systems, has bought a packaging company in Melbourne, Australia.

Family-owned Burgess Printing and Packaging delivers products and services to customers in the food, beverage, pharmaceutical, industrial and chemical industries.

Hans Schur says the acquisition is part of a strategy to develop its Schur Star concept worldwide: "We look forward to continuing the close working relationship with the existing customers and to developing the Burgess business and market further," he says.

Schur is also private and family-owned with 15 companies worldwide offering folding boxes and flexible packaging, as well as packaging machines and systems including those for the newspaper industry. Established 170 years ago, it

has about 900 employees in Denmark, Sweden, Germany, France and the USA.

Burgess Printing and Packaging employs 40 people and has annual revenue of about A$18 million (13 million Euros). Fifth-generation owner Jan Evans points to the similarities between them: Schur, like Burgess, is based on long-standing family values and a focus on supporting the demands from their customers."

Schur Star is a concept to supply pre-made flexible bags custom made for filling on linked production lines, claimed to be unique in its ability to change bag size and functionalities in five minutes.
