Newspapers shone in New Zealand’s print apprentice of the year competition and at the Pride in Print awards last Friday night.

Two of the five top apprentices – Franz-Josef Mundt (pictured) and Matthew Lowe – work for newspapers, while outright winner Jason Rako is a binding and finishing apprentice at PMP Print in Christchurch.

Winner of the reel-fed printing award, Mundt is a newspaper printer at Taranaki Newspapers in New Plymouth, while Lowe, who won the digital processes for print award, works in newspaper layout and production at Beacon Printing & Publishing in Whakatane.

Pride in Print

Strong vibrant colours which helped ‘Valley Voice’ magazine “stand out from the crowd” helped Horton Media to a Pride in Print gold medal and the New Zealand competition’s web-offset process prize.

Horton won two other golds – for ‘NZ Aviation News’ and ‘Cook Island Sun’ – and three highly commended awards. Other magazines gold awards went to PMP Print Auckland for ‘The Natural Parent’ and ‘Avenues Magazine’ (with PMP Print Christchurch), and APN Print Tauranga for ‘The Newspaper Ad Year 09-10’.

In the newspapers category, gold went to APN Print Hastings for ‘Wairarapa Times Age’ and APN Print Ellerslie for ‘The New Zealand Herald’.
