Australia’s seasonal round of PICA and regional awards have delivered thin pickings for newspaper and heatset printers.
In Perth, Western Australia’s Tron-themed PICA celebration had medals in the newspaper, inserts and catalogues categories, but things were decidedly quiet in Queensland and Tasmania.
Community Newspapers apprentice Bronte Vincent was named LIA Heidelberg graduate of the year and Scott Print’s Rio Chard the 2014 recipient of the Media Super Future Leaders award. PICA chairman Theo Pabst was also recognised for his industry work receiving the WA printing industry recognition award.
In the medal listings, gold for newspaper inserts went to WA Newspapers for Habitat and Fairfax Media for WA Business. PMP Limited took silver for Paul Carroll Shoes, and there was bronze for Colourpress for West Weekend and Fairfax Media for Life & Leisure.
In the newspapers category, Fairfax Media won gold for Perth Voice, silver for Eternity, and bronze for Bunbury Mail.
Colourpress won bronze for its Myers Stocktake Sale catalogue, a category in which Scott Print (two) and Percival Print & Packaging also scored bronze.
Newspaper awards were scarce in the restyled Queensland PICAs – Fairfax Media Ormiston taking bronze, the only medal awarded in the web-offset category – and non-existent in the Tasmanian awards, now renamed Diemens.
