Glossy specials push Fairfax NIMs upmarket

Fairfax Media will be hoping it can keep up the momentum with the first of two planned glossy editions of its Good Weekend magazine last Saturday.

Plans are to follow the 56-page magazine inserted into the Saturday Age and Sydney Morning Herald - based on glossy stock and a premium cover wrap for the Mercedes-Benz's new E-Class - with another glossy edition on October 8.

The specials follow the closure of upmarket The [Sydney] Magazine and The [Melbourne] Magazine editions which worked well in NSW but were not equally well received in the southern capital.

The Good Weekend 'design and innovation' issue included features on Australian designers including VR artist Lynette Wallworth and fashion label Gorman's collaboration with 88-year-old Mirka Mora, while writer Konrad Marshall tackled the issue of branding himself.

The October 8 gloss edition will be an 'arts and culture' issue promising "the most fascinating creative spirits of our age", and timed for the Fairfax-supported the Opera in the Vineyards in the NSW Hunter Valley.
