Australian prime minister Scott Morrison has been accused of hypocrisy over apparent dual standards on freedom pf the press.

News Corp Australia's Campbell Reid says that while Morrison "seems to see freedom of the press as being very important in China", it appears less of a priority in Australia.

Speaking at the Alliance for Journalists' Freedom summit, Reid that Morrison seems to be very concerned about the treatment of writer Yang Hengjun in China, "while the federal government did not seem so concerned" when the Australian Federal Police raided the home of a News Corp journalist and the ABC's Sydney headquarters in June.

There has also been outrade over a comment made by home affairs secretary Mike Pezzullo in which he complimented the AFP on the raid on journalist Annika Smethurst's home.

Pezzullo admits he called AFP deputy commissioner Neil Gaughan after tge june raid on the home of journalist Annika Smethurst in June. Gaughan had emailed staff on the evening of the raid, saying Pezzullo had rung to express support for the AFP's actions. His comments have been criticized by Senator Rex Patrick for a "lack of judgement".

on his part. Pezzullo has noted that Gaughan is a colleague, and his comments were intended as a compliment to him and his staff on their professionalism.
