2020 vision: Getting your mojo on, one brick at a time

Mobile journalism trainer Robb Montgomery has published his latest gear list... and it's l-e-a-n.

But above all, the focus is on stability and sound, with a grip, small tripod, mic and adapter cable priorities ahead of greater sophistication such as gimbals and extra lenses. Oh, and your iPhone.

"Capturing good sound is always the most challenging issue and the one that makes the biggest difference at first," he says, warning against buying unknown equipment which might break when most needed.

A small lapel mic - for you or your interview subject - might be one of several you can expect to collect, and Montgomery advocates the Røde SC6-L two-mic adapter, which he says is "a game changer", to manage them, recording two-channel isolated audio tracks.

Other recommended components, he says, are like Lego bricks and can be reconfigured for different scenarios. They include the free DoubleTake app, which enables an iPhone 11 to record two shots, and a Shoulderpod G2 to which a light and mics can be attached.

Check out his recommendations here, and look out for a workshop such as those organised with WAN-Ifra at conferences and for custom clients.

Looking at his updated list, it looks like it's time GXpress went back for a refresher!
