Sharing the formulae for profitability and growth

While challenges for growth and profitability persist, news publishers who are finding success have approaches and elements to share.

That’s some of the raison d’etre of the upcoming World News Media Congress in Taipei (June 28-30).

Case studies come from organisations in both mature and developing markets, with results their leaders are proud of, with the journey set to take delegates from Denmark and Australia to Japan, the USA and Indonesia.

Cases differ in scale, focus and market conditions, as well as in their approach to advertising and subscriptions, but they share a message of progress, success and hope.

Among highlights from WAN-Ifra’s World News Media Congress programme are:

JP/Politiken Media Group, Denmark's challenging trek through experimentations and change. The result: double-digit growth in a competitive market after years of stagnation.

News Corp Australia’s success in reaching a million paying subscribers in 2022 – remarkable in a country of 25 million people – is a story about being stubbornly audience-centric, producing quality journalism and reaping the rewards.

Nikkei, Japan, is another global success story in digital subscriptions. The group has amassed more than 10 million digital subscribers since its 2015 acquisition of the Financial Times, and continues to launch more and more digital products, the latest of which is ‘ScoutAsia’.

McClatchy, USA’s story is of its journey from bankruptcy to stability. Having made quality local journalism the centrepiece of its business strategy, it is now layering in AI, technology, new tools and constant experimentation to drive strong audience and subscriber growth.

Kompas, Indonesia’s journey to sustainability – from a newspaper founded in 1965 to becoming the country's largest media company – was built on the reputation and trust of the printed product. KG Media is now seeking to translate this into the digital ecosystem and create a sustainable model for the future.

In a reminder about visas, organisers say delegates from 66 countries do not require a visa for short stays of 14 days or up to 90 days. Those who do, need to contact the embassy or consulate in their country directly. A general visitor/tourist visa is sufficient for attending the Congress, with no need to apply for a business visa.
