WAN-Ifra has announced dates and a cluster of top line speakers for its two Asian AI Forum events in August, now to be held in Kuala Lumpur and Hanoi, moving the latter from September.

With so much to tackle on the subject, AI in media has become an essential, so organisers have been able to arrange events in two centres. The Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia event is on August 12, with that in Hanoi, Vietnam, on August 14.

The main keynote speakers and subject matter experts are the same but each event will have its own distinct local flavour.

Core speakers are:

-Ezra Eeman, who is strategy and innovation director at Dutch public broadcaster NPO, who also leads the WAN-Ifra AI in Media initiative and is lead advisor to the 2024 JournalismAI Innovation Challenge;

-digital and AI innovator Claudia Báez, a consultant associate at Fathm in Colombia, whose role includes facilitating global AI programmes for WAN-Ifra–OpenAI, the Google News Initiative, and the Thomson Reuters Foundation;

-from Swizerland, OK Lab founder and AI & digital strategy consultant Christophe Israël; and

-San Francisco-based Singaporean Derrick Ho, from Hearst Newspapers, USA, where he is editorial director for AI & automation, with leadership experience at the New York Times, Gannett, and McClatchy.

Topics include the shift from ‘tools’ to ‘agents’ – agentic AI, multi-step reasoning, and systems that act on behalf of users. And, how AI agents are working inside workflows at media organisations and Model Context Protocol (MCP) and tool orchestration.

Speakers will also address:

-industrialisation of AI inside media companies and scaling AI in production environments for measurable, sustainable ROI;

-audience and distribution transformation – how traditional search is being replaced by answer engines, chat interfaces embedded across platforms, and advanced recommendation systems;

-how AI is building newsroom capabilities – improving workflows, enhancing operational efficiencies, and increasing productivity;

-governance & trust – regulation, copyright, deepfakes, and safeguarding public value in an AI-driven community; and

-how AI is transforming the landscape and media ecosystem in Malaysia and Vietnam and the best-of-class case studies from leading publishers in those countries.
