Anthony Catalano has drawn on his extensive knowledge of real estate marketing and taken out a rival with the acquisition of a Bendigo freesheet.
Rival free Bendigo Weekly will become a supplement to Catalano's Bendigo Advertiser, its real estate content channeled into Friday and Saturday editions of his daily paper and online.
What Catalano described as a "compelling opportunity" for the Australian Community Media business he bought from Nine Entertainment this year will see a strengthened partnership with the Domain real estate portal he helped build, and which is now 60 per cent owned by Nine.
The Bendigo Weekly becomes a dedicated insert in the weekend edition of the Bendigo Advertiser, while its popular property listings go into the Advertiser's Domain liftouts.
Catalano used his presence at Mumbrella's Publish conference last week to advocate changes to media laws affecting regional publishers and broadcasters. He described it as "absurd" that only one TV station for an area. Consolidation and change were needed to avoid closures, he said.
He had discussed issues with Nationals leader and deputy prime minister Michael McCormack, who is a former publisher of ACM's Wagga Daily Advertiser, but said the industry needed to come together with a band of initiatives.
