Cuts for Bauer now in UK, but Hill flags Australia return

With its NZ business closed and changes for ten UK titles, Bauer in Australia is moving to bring back furloughed print magazines.

Chief executive Brendan Hill has indicated that print magazines including NW, OK! and WHO as well as niche titles Harper's Bazaar, Elle, Instyle, Men's Health, Women's Health and Good Health could be back by September.

While Bauer operations in Australia are currently on the market, the news will be welcomed by staff, printers and readers.

Following its acquisition of Pacific Magazines from Seven West Media, Bauer has an estimated 55 per cent of the Australian magazine market. It shut its NZ operation after the government restrictions barred magazine printing; in the UK, the German-owned publisher has said it will close, merge or sell ten titles which it believes will not be sustainable after the COVID-19 crisis is over.
