Elevated sensors supported manual spot counting of demonstrators in Paris yesterday as French media groups teamed on counting.

AFP says it worked with 20 groups and research and consulting firm Occurrence, as part of moves to jointly assess the number of people in gatherings in order to reflect events as accurately as possible.

Occurrence uses two elevated sensors to trace a virtual line that counts each demonstrator on the ground, with manual spot counts reinforcing the method.

The process was used for the first time to count the number of people at public sector demonstrations in Paris yesterday. Groups taking part included AFP, France Inter, RTL, Europe 1, Franceinfo, RMC, France Culture, BFMTV, CNews, France 2, Médiapart, Le Monde, Le Figaro, Le Parisien and Les Echos.
