Not working: HuffPost cuts to Indian model for Australia

It has a page called 'what's working'... but Huffington Post's Australian edition isn't in it.

Yesterday HuffPost's American owners and minority partner Fairfax Media announced their two-year-old joint venture was being ended, with the expectation that most of its team will be disbanded.

The publisher is expected to reorganise with contractors in a strategy similar to that used in India. In the end, the territory founder Arianna Huffington had called "fertile ground" was simply not working. Audience - as many know - might be one thing; converting that into revenue is another, although there were hopes that the project was beginning to make a profit.

HuffPost Australia says that as the Australian joint venture comes to an end, HuffPost will operate "a standalone Australian edition" from December 1 with a smaller local team.

There are reports that Fairfax is likely to redeploy some of the more than 30 staff members into its metro publishing business, which is headed by Chris Janz who had led the joint venture at the launch.

Some redundancies are expected.

Originally HuffPost's Koda Wang had said the publisher expected to become the market leader in three to five years.
