Integrated SCS and Lineup systems will upgrade advertisement handling at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, a pioneer of the original Layout-80 system.

Software Consulting Services is to install the current Layout-8000 dummying application with SCS/ClassPag pagination and Lineup's retail and classified advertising system.

Layout-8000 is the successor of Layout-80, which had been developed when Nazareth, Pennsylvania, based SCS president Richard Cichelli was research manager at ANPA (now News Media Alliance). From the original 28,000 lines of code, it has now expanded to three million lines over 37 years of development.

The Post-Gazette installed Layout-80 on a PDP 11/70 computer in 1980, together with an order entry and scheduling system, famously written for them in just under four weeks.

Owned by Block Communications, today's newspaper reaches a combined audience of over one million readers a week across digital and print platforms, the latter strengthened by the installation of an all-colour triple-wide Goss Uniliner press in 2015.
