COVID categories and new winners in Asian Media Awards

Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post led the field in this year’s 20th Asian Media Awards, with three gold, four silver and a bronze.

The WAN-Ifra competition – which recognises newspaper and magazine design, infographics, editorial content, marketing, community service, revenue diversification and photojournalism – saw a number of major Asian news publishers honoured.

Some 34 media companies from nine countries took in this year’s competition.

SCMP won gold and silver in magazine cover design, gold and silver for breaking news article, silver for feature article and COVID-19 reporting, and gold, silver and bronze for newspaper Infographics.

Other standouts were: India Today Group (five awards including two gold), Nikkei Inc (four awards including two gold), Kompas Daily Newspaper (three awards including one gold), and Singapore Press Holdings (three awards).

First-time winners were Khaleej Times, Arab News, Rashtradoot, VnExpress, and Kumparan.

A new category for COVID-19 reporting was won by Nikkei Inc, while the sports photography category was replaced by one for COVID-19-related photography, won by The Week (Malayala Manorama).

Also new was an honour for best revenue diversification project/product/service recognising new innovative projects/products/services which engage audiences and increase media brand awareness while creating a new and sustainable revenue stream. Winner was Bennett Coleman & Company for ‘Largest Hindi/Bengali audio-infotainment service in the world’.
