A newspaper wrapper printed on fabric has won this year’s product innovation prize in the World Printers Forum’s print innovation competition.

The ‘cloth front jacket’ from India’s DBCorp was one of 40 entries in the competition which embraced product and advertising innovation, special editions, products for young readers and innovation in sustainability.

Other winners were:

Advertising innovation: Ads24 in South Africa – Lil-lets Talk

Products for young readers: Helsingin Sanomat – Lasten uutiset

Special editions: Toronto Star – Canada Day

Sustainability Innovation: VK Media Umeå Sweden – Saving Electricity

India’s Dainik Bhaskar produced the special cover to mark its 15 years in the “textlile city” of Bhilwara, as part of a 204-page Foundation Day Issue there.

The publisher’s Rajastan chief operating officer Vareesh Tiwari said the idea of printing on fabric had not been tried before, and was seen as a unique experience for readers and clients.

State editor Kiran Rajpurohit said the aim had been to deliver a collector’s edition: “An edition with its front page on fabric is one of its kind issue in the history of print media and I hope our readers will want to keep this mega issue in their bookshelves.”
