manroland has relocated a Goss newspaper press for influential Chinese newspaper People's Daily.

The project is the latest of several since Augsburg, Germany, based manroland web systems starting pushing harder for contracts to service and upgrade presses made by third-party manufacturers.

In the US, manroland is installing its PECOM-X control desk and other equipment on the Goss Colorliners at Digital First Media's Bay Area News group print site in Concord, California.

The maker says its Inline Control System has also been installed at "numerous" non-manroland press sites.

At People's Daily in Beijing, a six-tower Goss Universal 45 has been relocated and is back in production. Manroland was responsible for the complete relocation, including the disassembly, load out, transport, load in, assembly and commissioning.

"manroland began to expand its own service offering to include service of presses produced by competitors about a year ago, and it has proved successful," said a spokesperson. "Today it can already boast two successful control upgrades on Goss presses."

In China, its market organisation has been able to build its reputation "even among customers of competing manufacturers", based on strong presence and reliability.

The People's Daily press - of six towers, two folders and six reel splicers - is also being fitted with an interface for a blanket-washing device.
