'News goes away': How Chrome changes harm news

America's News Media Alliance has produced an infographic to show readers the effect of Google's Incognito browser.

Under these changes, implemented as part of Google's Chrome 76 browser update in late July 2019, users are able to 'sample' news content indefinitely. Google says this was done to 'protect users' privacy', but the NMA says this is not true, "the change does nothing more to protect users' personal identities".

The infographic illustrates what it says can be the only outcomes if people can sample forever:

Option 1: No more sampling, hard paywalls, everyone pays all the time.

or

Option 2: News is all free, there is no investment in journalism, and news goes away.

Members are being encouraged to share the infographic to informs readers that both are damaging to both news and consumers.
