Harland Simon will upgrade EAE press controls at Gannett Publishing Services Desert Sun in Palm Springs, California, its fifth upgrade for the company in three years.

In Palm Springs, controls on a Goss Headliner press and communications to two KBA towers – plus associated reelstands – will be upgraded in the second quarter of 2014.

Obsolete EAE controls will be replaced with systems based on Allen-Bradley PLC hardware. Main press controls are to be replaced and two Prima 6000 operator consoles and a comprehensive management information system installed.

Harland Simon says its EAE upgrade experience has been building for a number of years starting with the Vancouver Sun, and continuing with the Birmingham News and currently reelstand controls at the Des Moines Register.

“We have been in consultation with the team from Palm Springs and GPS for a number of years,” says Americas managing director John Staiano. “As such, this order has great professional and personal pride for all involved.”

• Harland Simon is also upgrading ink control screens on seven Timson presses at UK book printer Clays of Bungay. The upgrade will replace obsolete control electronics with PCs and touch screen technology while making use of existing GMI ink duct controllers.
